HONOR’s upcoming Magic 9 series is taking a different approach to the flagship-phone race. Instead of focusing only on faster chips or higher camera resolutions, the company is combining 3D biometric security, ARRI-based video technology and next-generation processing hardware.

HONOR has confirmed that the Magic 9 series will launch in Beijing on September 28, 2026. The company has also announced its collaboration with German cinema technology company ARRI for the phone’s imaging system.

Pricing and international availability remain [NEEDS VERIFICATION].

Dual 3D Biometrics Could Change Phone Authentication

One of the Magic 9 series’ headline security features is a combination of 3D facial recognition and 3D ultrasonic fingerprint recognition.

HONOR has officially announced the dual-biometric technology and describes it as an “industry-exclusive” system. That description should be treated as HONOR’s claim, rather than an independently established industry record.

The two systems use different approaches. 3D facial recognition uses depth information to map the user’s face, while ultrasonic fingerprint technology uses sound waves to read the physical structure of a fingerprint.

The important question is not simply whether both technologies exist, but which Magic 9 models will actually include both. Current leaked specifications suggest the Pro Max is expected to receive the combination, while the standard Magic 9 may use ultrasonic fingerprint recognition without the full dual-biometric setup. That model-by-model breakdown remains [NEEDS VERIFICATION].

ARRI Brings a Cinema-Oriented Video Workflow

The camera system is where HONOR is making its most distinctive push.

HONOR says the Magic 9 series is being developed with ARRI, bringing ARRI image-science technology into a smartphone. The announced system includes ARRI LogC3, ARRI Wide Gamut 3 and ARRI Looks, while HONOR is also promoting a dedicated ARRI Cinema Mode.

Reported camera specifications include two 200MP sensors. The main camera is listed with a 1/1.28-inch sensor, f/1.57 aperture and 3-axis OIS, while the periscope telephoto is reported to use a 1/1.4-inch sensor with an f/2.6 aperture.

Camera feature Reported specification
Main camera 200MP, 1/1.28-inch, f/1.57, 3-axis OIS
Periscope telephoto 200MP, 1/1.4-inch, f/2.6
Video pipeline ARRI LogC3
Color/look tools ARRI Looks
Cinema Mode 3-second recording
Aspect ratio 2.39:1

For creators, LogC3 matters because it is designed for a video workflow that retains more image information for later color work. ARRI says its mobile implementation is adapted for smartphone sensors, optics and computational processing, so the feature should not be interpreted as turning the phone into a dedicated cinema camera.

The new ARRI Cinema Mode also gives users more control over short clips. A long press can record a three-second sequence, while the footage uses a 2.39:1 widescreen format. HONOR has also announced an ARRI Look Library with nine themes and 87 looks.

2nm Processing and Much Larger Batteries

Performance is another major part of the Magic 9 story.

Current reports associate the higher-end Magic 9 models with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and a TSMC 2nm manufacturing process. A smaller process node can increase transistor density and improve the balance between performance and power consumption, but real-world results depend on the complete chip design and software.

Qualcomm’s reported figures of 10–15% higher performance or 25–30% lower energy consumption compared with 3nm should be treated as manufacturer projections, not independent benchmark results.

Battery capacity is also expected to be unusually high. Current leaked specifications put the Magic 9 Pro Max at 8,800mAh, with 100W wired charging.

Another Magic 9 variant is reportedly being developed with an internal active-cooling fan. That could help maintain performance during sustained workloads such as gaming, but independent testing is needed to establish how much difference the cooling system makes.

What Buyers Still Need to Know

Several important details remain unsettled before the September 28 launch.

The final model lineup, retail prices, global release plans, model-specific biometric features and active-cooling availability still need confirmation. Wireless charging specifications also vary between leaked reports and should not be treated as final.

For creators, the more important question will be how well the ARRI workflow performs outside controlled demonstrations. LogC3, ARRI Looks and the 2.39:1 format provide useful tools, but actual image quality will depend on the phone’s sensors, lenses, processing and software implementation.

The same applies to the 2nm Snapdragon chip. A smaller manufacturing process is promising on paper, but independent benchmarks will show whether those theoretical advantages translate into faster sustained performance or better battery efficiency.

What Readers Should Know

The Honor Magic 9 series is built around three main ideas: 3D biometric security, cinema-focused video and new-generation processing hardware.

HONOR has confirmed the ARRI collaboration, LogC3 video pipeline and dual 3D biometric technology, while several hardware specifications remain based on leaks or pre-launch reports.

The September 28 launch should provide the final answers on pricing, model differences, battery capacities and international availability.
